Supression of Disbelief
In human psychology there is a phenomenon called “suppression of disbelief” . How it works in games and other media is — if the atmosphere and general feeling are compelling enough (compelling = subjective), the consumer subconsciously ignores a lot of the shortcomings of the media piece.
Rationally speaking, this is stupid. Yet the effect of “suppression of disbelief” is incredibly strong. Psychologists believe we have evolved this mechanism in order to derive better meaning from stories, which were the primary communication and knowledge sharing tool for 2 million years of our evolution. So it is stupid, but supposedly it has some purpose.
